METHOD PSI-BLAST searches did not yield similarities to other protein families,  
METHOD but showed several entirely conserved residues with potentially catalytic 
METHOD roles.  These included invariant His and Asp residues in the correct 
METHOD location and spacing to correspond to the catalytic His and Asp residues 
METHOD of alpha/beta hydrolases.  A comparison of alpha/beta hydrolases of  
METHOD known structure pointed us to the thioesterase 1tht which showed a  
METHOD surprisingly high sequence similarity to our target in the region  
METHOD corresponding to the catalytic Ser in 1tht.  Our target also contained 
METHOD a nearly invariant Ser in the same position.  We therefore used 1tht 
METHOD as a template, and aligned the two proteins by maximum overlap of  
METHOD the predicted and observed secondary structures.
