The adhesin tip of the bacteriophage S16 long tail fiber mediates bacterial host attachment by recognising specific cell surface receptors. A single receptor-binding adhesin (gp38) attaches to a trimeric gp37 helix during fiber assembly at the end of the long tail fiber. Understanding the structure of the S16 gp38 adhesin not only benefits our understanding of phage-host interactions, but can be exploited to guide phage engineering to develop phage with altered host ranges for various applications, such as therapeutics (e.g., phage therapy).
