We identified this protein as part of our analysis of the conserved _housekeeping_ genes carried by SCCmec, the mobile genetic element that carries methicillin resistance in MRSA strains. It is encoded in the same operon as a helicase, Cch, that we also determined the structure of. We found that this protein binds ssDNA with high affinity and modest cooperativity. We determined its structure because it was only labeled _DUF1413_ in databases, and its predicted secondary structure did not match that of the OB folds that are common in ssDNA-binding proteins.
