Esp is thought to contribute to biofilm formation and host colonization by E. faecalis, but the mechanism is not known. There is almost no sequence homology to any proteins of characterized structure, and structural prediction servers are unable to render models for Esp405. Thus, we sought to crystallize this N-terminal fragment and use the structure to guide functional experiments.
